Qld Labor to lose Ipswich West, retain Inala after after double-digit swings - Sky News Australia

Queensland voters have sent the government a message, with the Labor Party suffering massive double-digit swings in two by-elections held on Saturday.

Premier Steven Miles government is on the brink of losing the Labor heartland seat of Ipswich West, while narrowly holding onto former Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s seat of Inala.

The Liberal and National Party’s (LNP) Darren Zanow is set to win Ipswich West after voters delivered a 15 per cent swing against Labor following the retirement of Jim Madden.

With 73.8 per cent of the vote counted, Labor’s Wendy Bourne sits on a primary vote of just 35.1 per cent, while Mr Zanow is on 39.8 per cent.

Legalise Cannabis candidate Melody Lindsay has received 14.4 per cent of the vote, just above One Nation’s Mark Marston Bone who managed 10.7 per cent.

This is projected to result in a Two-Party-Preferred (2PP) result of 52.9 per cent to 47.1 per cent Victory for the LNP.

Queensland Labor had attempted to limit the impact of the Legalise Cannabis vote by recruiting ALP supporters to hand out how-to-vote cards for the party, but the plan appears to have been unsuccessful with an estimated 40 per cent of the preferences flowing to the LNP.

The situation for Labor looks slightly more positive in the seat of Inala, despite Labor’s Margie Nightingale receiving a primary vote 30.9 per cent lower than then Premier Palaszczuk did in 2020.

Ms Nightingale is currently sitting on a 2PP lead of 57.2 per cent to 42.8 per cent for the LNP’s Trang Yen, with 58.9 per cent of the vote counted.

The Labor candidate has received 36.6 per cent primary vote, ahead Ms Yen’s 29 per cent. Greens candidate Navdeep Singh Sidhu received 10.1 per cent primary vote and is narrowly ahead of Independent Linh Nguyen, who is on 10 per cent.

Premier Miles said the by-elections were always going to be difficult for the government.

“We’ll keep listening to Queenslanders and keep delivering,” the Premier said.

Opposition leader David Crisafulli said while the result had not changed the government, Queenslanders had delivered a strong message.

“We asked Queenslanders to send a message and they did,” he said.
