'Left him for dead': Man hospitalised after violent home invasion in Melbourne - 9News

A 74-year-old man has been hospitalised after an early morning home invasion in an affluent Bayside suburb of Melbourne.

Police said the manold was "significantly assaulted" at his home in Beaumaris just before 1.30am.

He was taken to the intensive care unit at The Alfred Hospital, where he improved and was in a stable condition.

Up to three people broke into the home with the victim left with a broken eye-socket, a brain bleed, and significant bloodloss, a friend of the victim told Jacqui Felgate on Nine's 3AW radio.

"We genuinely thought that it wasn't looking good and we were going to lose him," the friend, Sarah, said.

"They've essentially left him for dead".

The man and his wife were in their bedroom when the doorbell rang around 1.30am yesterday.

They stayed in their bedroom, but the intruders "completely shattered" the back doors, breaking into the couple's home of 30 years.

After the 74-year-old attempted confront the home invaders, he was seriously assaulted.

Sarah said the man suffered a broken eye socket, a brain-bleed, and a nicked jugular vein.

The man was resuscitated after the attack, and will likely require surgery to repair his eye socket.

The woman was not injured but the man was "significantly assaulted", according to police, and received serious head and facial injuries.

At this stage, it doesn't appear that anything was stolen from the home.
