Climate protestors arrested during Melbourne CBD blockade - 9News

Climate change protesters have been arrested in Melbourne's CBD after staging a sit-in blockade of Flinders Street Station.

A week of protests on Melbourne's streets culminated with a march this afternoon, with the group demanding the federal government declare a climate emergency.

There was a strong police presence as a group of protestors sat in a circle in the middle of the tram tracks around 4pm.

Shortly after they arrived, police began to arrest members of the group who were sitting in the middle of the intersection.

Around 300 people were in the protest in front of Flinders Street Station.

Police said 32 people were arrested during the blockade and of those, 27 people will be charged on summons with obstruction of a road.

Five people were carried from the road by police and will be charged with obstructing police, with one person charged with hindering police.

The group of activists left Flinders Street around 5pm, marching back towards Treasury Gardens, where the protest began.

The protesters used a rental truck to obstruct the lanes, with thousands stuck in the resulting traffic jam.

One woman, caught in the traffic on her way to the hospital, was left with no choice but to give birth in her car.

The climate activist was given a three week jail term but was released early, on the condition she not "block any roadways during a protest".

It was Coco's second stint behind bars, having previously been given an eight month jail sentence, that was later overturned, for blocking the Sydney Harbour Bridge with a truck.

Adblock test (Why?)
