Tropical Cyclone Lincoln forms off the Northern Territory coast - 9News

A tropical cyclone which has formed off the Northern Territory coast in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria is predicted to cross the coast later today.
Tropical Cyclone Lincoln is expected to cross the coast as a category 1 system late this afternoon or this evening between the Northern Territory-Queensland border and Port McArthur in the territory.

The weather system formed late this morning, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The weather system is expected to move to the south to southwest over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria this afternoon.

As it moves inland tonight, the system is expected to quickly weaken below tropical cyclone intensity.

It will then begin moving west across the Northern Territory over the weekend.

Gales with damaging wind gusts to 110km/h are expected to develop along the coast between Bing Bong and Mornington Island during the day as the cyclone approaches and crosses the coast.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is expected along the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast and locally intense rainfall is also possible.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a range of flood watches and warnings along with a severe weather warning.

Tides will be higher than normal across the southern Gulf of Carpentaria today and tomorrow, while large waves may produce minor flooding of low-lying coastal areas as the system nears the coast today.

"While we have named it as a tropical cyclone, it remains a category one tropical cyclone," Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Shenagh Gamble said.

"A lot of the rain and wind hazards that we've been talking about still continue with pretty much the same risk profile.

"Now that the system has consolidated into a more organised weather system, we will still closely watch it as it approaches the coast during this afternoon.

"Our current focus is we expect a tropical cyclone Lincoln across the southern Gulf of Carpinteria Coast in the vicinity of Borroloola and Robinson River at around 7pm tonight.

"After crossing the coast, the system will downgrade quite quickly to a tropical low, however the wind and heavy rainfall that is associated with this broad area of circulation, the risk of those hazards still continues."

More to come.
