Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has shrugged off any cause for concern over border control in Australia following the arrival of asylum seekers in Western Australia.
More than 20 people believed to have been from Pakistan and Bangladesh arrived by boat in the remote area of Beagle Bay, about 100km north of Broome on Friday.
The ABF released a statement yesterday, revealing it was undertaking an operation however no further information was provided.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, the PM said he had spoken with home affairs minister Clare O’Neil and the commander of taskforce Operation Sovereign Borders, Rear Admiral Brett Sonter about what had occurred and was calm about how the manner was being handled.
“We don’t talk about the detail of operational matters but I’m very comfortable that the Operation Sovereign Borders has been put in place. It’s the same system that operated before and we will make announcements about what has occurred there…when that occurs,” Mr Albanese told reporters.
“Our position on Operation Sovereign Borders is very clear, and people who attempt to arrive here by boat will not settle here.”
Mr Albanese also called out those who had attempted to politicise the situation in response to a question about politicians referring the incident to the NZYQ High Court ruling that found indefinite immigration detention to be unlawful.
“We do not seek to politicise national security issues and it is unfortunate, when any politician seeks to do so, and I’d ask them to have a look at the clear statements that were made by the chief of Operation Sovereign Borders.”
When Mr Albanese held a press conference at Lake Haven in New South Wales on Friday, he had not yet been briefed on the asylum seekers, telling reporters he had been in the car and not had contact from anyone with information.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton pulled no punches in his assessment of the situation on Friday as he attacked the PM for initially having a lack of knowledge on the incident before declaring the Labor government had “lost control of our borders”.
“The Prime Minister's phone works in the car, he should've taken a call, he should've called his minister in return to ask what is going on,” he said.
Mr Dutton went on to suggest people smugglers could “pick out a weak leader”, a claim Mr Albanese fired back at on Saturday.
“Well I think that says more about him, than anything else,” the PM bluntly replied.
