It comes after some HSC students got access to their exam results on Saturday, five days earlier than expected, due to an IT glitch.
"That actually is quite dangerous because the ATAR might be end up being completely different because of the scaling," Prue Car, NSW Shadow Minister for Education told 9News.
"That is going to cause a lot anxiety."
And there's also anxiety for those students who didn't discover their subject marks had gone up on their Students Online Account until after the results were removed.
Now, students like Fleur Davies are having to wait till the original release day of Thursday before they can find out more.
"Shocked that I couldn't log on in time, you know, scared for the next 7 days because some of my friends got really good results and I'm just waiting in the dark," the Bishop Druitt College student told 9News.
Students started to access their results from as early as 1am, with the URL going viral on the HSC Facebook discussion group, which has more than 32,000 members - that's nearly half of the state's class of 2022.
The site was eventually shutdown more than nine hours later, at 10:30am.
"We just apologise for the confusion or the distress that this may have caused," NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell told 9News.
"I've made it clear to NESA that I'm not happy about what's happened and I want a full explanation."
The New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) is now investigating the incident.
"We should now by during the week what exactly happened in that period or that window of time and then we'll make sure we can put into place safe guards for 2023," Paul Martin, CEO of NESA told 9News.
