Adelaide man hospitalised after freak accident in Bali - 9News

An Adelaide man has spent the last five days fighting for life in Bali after a freak accident that almost severed his arm.

Josh Ward was rushed to hospital after he slipped near a hotel pool and smashed into a glass door in Denpasar on Christmas night.

The 29-year-old painter severed a major artery in his arm about 12 hours into a holiday with his fiancé Chantelle Gschwend.

Ward spent the next seven hours in surgery with his tricep completely severed, his bicep partially ruptured with the possibility of amputation considered by the surgeon.

The accident cut short the couple's two-week trip to plan a wedding and now their life together is in limbo.

"When he's telling me things like 'all I can do is pray', I'm in my head you know thinking the worst," Gschwend told 9News.

"He means the world to me, he's the rock of my life, we do everything together," Ward's fiancée added.

"I can't even imagine my life without him and I don't even want to think that's an option."

His situation has been made more complicated by Indonesia's strict blood donation laws.

His family are desperate to get their loved one home but his condition must stabilise before doctors and his insurer clear him to fly out.

"B negative is a very rare blood type and they don't have enough donors for him, where as here they can use universal blood and everyone pretty much is a donor for him," his sister Billie Nunnerley told 9News.

Ward's mother Annette Brook was on the phone when her son was in the ambulance.

"All I could hear was the ambulance guy saying 'Josh, we're trying to save your life, Josh'

"I can't tell you what was going through my mind... I thought I was going to lose him," she said.

Adding: "I just want him home now."

This afternoon Ward's condition improved enough for him to be cleared to fly home tonight and is set to arrive back in Australia shortly.

On landing in Adelaide, he will head straight to hospital.
