QLD police shooting: Brothers, woman at centre of deadly Wieambilla property shooting had been in love triangle - 7NEWS

Two brothers and a woman who fatally shot two police officers and a neighbour on a rural Queensland property had been involved in a love triangle.

Nathaniel and Gareth Train were also shot dead, along with Gareth’s wife Stacey, amid a siege at the Wieambilla property on Monday after the trio killed young officers Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold, and their neighbour Alan Dare.

As more is pieced together about the three members of the Train family, 7NEWS can reveal Nathaniel Train and Stacey had initially been in a relationship after they met through their careers in education.

While they met early in their careers, they would go on to prominent roles in the teaching profession, with Nathaniel Train landing several primary school principal roles and Stacey becoming Head of Curriculum at Tara Shire State College until last year.

7NEWS understands that after their relationship broke down, Stacey commenced a relationship with Gareth Train. It is believed the pair were married.

They lived together at the Wieambilla home where the deadly shooting took place.

Gareth also worked in education, having been a groundskeeper and teachers’ aide.

“Gareth, Nathaniel and Stacey Train are former employees of the Queensland Department of Education,” a spokesperson for the department told 7NEWS.com.au.

“Gareth Train resigned from the Department in May 2016, Nathaniel Train resigned from the Department in March 2020, and Stacey Train resigned from the Department in December 2021.”

After leaving his role as principal of Yorkeys Knob State School, Nathaniel Train moved to New South Wales to become principal of Walgett Community College Primary School.

There is evidence he was a dedicated educator throughout his career, with Walgett parent Katrina Marshall telling 7NEWS he had “compassion” for students.

“I never had a problem with him. My son’s got special needs and does not do well at school. (Nathaniel Train) started putting in measures for him to feel safe at school and participate in more activities at school,” she said.

“He started laying the foundation work for that.

“Unfortunately, he went off on sick leave and we got a new principal, who continued on with that.

“He was nothing but supportive. If you had an issue, you could go and speak with him.”

It’s reported the reason 46-year-old Train went on sick leave was because he had suffered a heart attack.

Christine Grossman-Rule, a parent who had a child at Yorkeys Knob while Train was there, also praised him.

“I just remember enrolling my daughter in the school and being in the principal’s office with him. He was a gentleman, very considerate of everything and couldn’t have helped me more settle her into the school,” she told 7NEWS.

‘Unfathomably evil act’

“He realised she needed a bit of extra help and got a bit of extra help for her.

“The kids loved him. He would play football and kick the ball with them.

“I just thought the world of him and am in total shock.”

Craig Crawford, the state MP for the Cairns-based Barron River electorate, also reported positive dealings with Train.

“He behaved and acted like any principal I’ve dealt with in my electorate,” he wrote on Facebook.

“He was passionate about his school and successfully lobbied for funding for undercover walkways and an expanded catchment area for Yorkeys Knob State School.

“He certainly betrayed no sign he could be capable of such an unfathomably evil act.”

It appeared Nathaniel Train had difficulties in Walgett prior to his departure, with reports he believed there had been NAPLAN cheating at the school.

He also emailed NSW One Nation MLC Mark Latham to complain of dysfunction at the school.

NSW authorities have dismissed suggestions they knew Train could have been dangerous when four Queensland police officers went to the Wieambilla to find Train, who had been reported missing from Dubbo.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb told 7NEWS on Wednesday that the inquiries were believed to be “routine”.

She said the matter remains under investigation.
