Dramatic footage captures the moment Yale Primary School is engulfed in flames - PerthNow

Dramatic footage has captured the moment a building at Yale Primary School was engulfed by flames in a fire, costing half-a-million dollars in damage.

Emergency services were called to the Sage Road school in Thornlie about 11pm Wednesday night after reports a fire had broken out in one of the buildings.

The devastating footage shows mile-high flames coming from the school’s roof accompanied by loud bangs as the fire rages through its computer lab.

Dozens of sirens can also be heard, while blue and red lights flash amidst the smoke in the sky.

Soon after the video pans to the street, and multiple cop cars pull up to join those already on the ground battling the blaze.

Police said the blaze ripped through the computer building and destroyed everything inside.

It took dozens of firefighters 25 minutes to bring the inferno under control.

Police remain at the crime scene, and have placed tape over the gates barring anyone from entering.

The school has alerted its families it will be closed on Thursday as there is no power or internet.

Mother-of-two Brooke Mihala lives across the road from the school.

“I heard sirens just before midnight last night, and lots of banging, like really loud bangs, and the chopper was going around,” she said.

“I saw blue and red flashing lights in the sky over the smoke, and Facebook posts saying there was a big fire.

“I thought it was just kids banging on the fences or doing something damaging, but I didn’t think it would be a big fire.”

Ms Mihala said the school had been great at communicating what was happening, and advising parents it would be closed for the day.

Her two girls, Maddi, 9, and Lexi, 7, go to the school and were both “very sad” it was shut for the day.

“I really wanted to go to school today to play with my friends so I’m really sad, and I also have art class today,” Maddi said.

“Because we live so close I didn’t want the fire to come all the way down to our house.”

Ms Mihala said she saw a child on a bike around the time the fire started, which she had reported to police.

The school is expected to reopen on Friday.

Arson Squad detectives and DFES investigators are assessing the scene to determine the cause of the fire.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the fire, or who have CCTV or mobile phone footage, to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online.
