According to Federal Health Department records, this is the first COVID-related death in an aged care facility in WA for the entire pandemic.

No further information was provided in WA Health’s COVID update on the vaccination status of the elderly woman that died, or if she had significant underlying health conditions.

The latest death – the fifth of WA’s Omicron wave – is the second reported this week after another woman in her 80s was revealed to have died with COVID on Monday.

The State reported 6062 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Tuesday, which brought the number of active infections to 28,772.

Of these, 123 COVID cases were in hospital, including two patients that require intensive care. That was an increase from 112 hospitalisations the day before, when just one person was in ICU.

The jump in infections -- 5377 cases were reported yesterday -- comes despite the PCR test rate dropping to 15,376 swabs on Tuesday, compared to 17,272 carried out on Monday.

The positivity rate for PCR tests increased to 17 per cent, which was up from the 13 per cent on Monday but still down from Sunday’s 20 per cent.

There have been 263 cases detected in residential aged care in WA’s current Omicron wave, according to Commonwealth data.

As of March 10, there were 47 active outbreaks in aged care homes across WA, with 129 residents and 161 staff reported as COVID positive.
