WA’s daily COVID case numbers have fallen for a third consecutive day, defying forecasts the State’s infections would peak this week.
WA Health reported 5626 new cases on Sunday, which was down from 5838 on Saturday, 6176 on Friday and 7151 on Thursday.
But in a sign that Omicron cases are going undetected, just over one-in-four PCR swabs — 26 per cent — were returned positive.
Health officials previously said they expected about 10,000 daily infections to be detected between March 14 and 18.
Chief Health Officer Andy Robertson on Saturday said he now expected this peak would be reached “in the coming weeks”.
The total number of active cases rose to 36,960, of which 155 people were in hospital and just three patients require intensive care.
This compared to 147 people with COVID in hospital and four in ICU the day before. No deaths were reported on Sunday.
The downward trend in reported cases could partly be explained by a decline in the number of PCR tests being carried out.
There were 10,661 PCR swabs on Saturday, compared to 14,044 on Friday, 14,766 on Thursday and 15,603 on Wednesday.
“The highest totals in recent weeks have usually been reported on a Thursday and a Friday with cases (as well as testing numbers) slightly reducing on weekends,” Dr Robertson said yesterday.
“Cases will continue to rise and in line with the modelling, I still believe we will reach about 10,000 daily cases in the coming weeks.”
Dr Robertson said the compliance with level two restrictions by West Australians had helped slow the spread of the virus.
“We also have some of the best COVID-19 vaccination levels in the world, especially by the time we started living with the virus,” he added.
“With 70 per cent of the eligible population now having had their booster vaccination, it is likely some people actually have the virus, but have no ill-effects and are not aware.”
The State recorded its deadliest day of the pandemic on Saturday when four people with COVID died.
