About 10 minutes later, the rescue boat crew found a man floating face down in the water and rushed him to shore where they carried out CPR for about 40 minutes before ambulances arrived, a NSW Surf Life Saving spokeswoman said.

Despite their efforts, the man died at the scene.

Police say the man is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be in his 50s.

A spokesperson said emergency services were called to Palm Beach at about 12.10pm, after reports that lifesavers had pulled the man from the water unconscious.

A report will be prepared for the NSW Coroner.
