While the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a break from relentless, heavy rainfall, emergency services are warning New South Wales residents that floodwaters could continue to rise and pose a risk to communities.
It comes as the swollen Hawkesbury River in Sydney's north-west is putting thousands of homes in surrounding low-level areas at risk of dangerous flash flooding.
The river was forecast to hit 14.3 metres by midday on Wednesday, which is around one metre higher than the level reached during the 2021 floods.
NSW SES has issued a flood warning for Hawkesbury Nepean River residents, with major flooding underway at North Richmond, Windsor, Sackville, Lower Portland and Wisemans Ferry.
Since January 1st, Sydney has received almost 900mm of rainfall.
BoM forecaster Dean Narramore said wet weather records are being broken.
"This year marks the wettest start to a year on record with 872.4mm, the previous record was 815.8mm in 1956," he said.
The bureau has forecast sunshine in the coming days, but has warned that floodwaters remain a major risk to communities.
Evacuation orders were issued overnight for communities near Singleton in the Hunter region, including Glenridding, Dunolly and Combo.
Others remain in place on the South Coast, including for Sussex Inlet and St Georges Basin.
In Sydney, the west and south-west regions are most affected, including Camden, the Hawkesbury, and suburbs along the Georges River.
In Sydney's Northern Beaches, where roads and homes were badly hit during yesterday's hammering rain, authorities have urged residents to monitor the situation.
Roads around Manly Vale and the Roseville Bridge remain very wet.
SES Assistant Commissioner Dean Storey said people should avoid unnecessary travel.
"I guess the key message this morning as people sort of wake up and leave their homes is avoid unnecessary travel if you are in the flood-affected areas," he said.
Mr Storey said "huge parts" of the state were still affected.
Very strong winds with gusts of up to 90km/h are forecast in Sydney today, and damaging and hazardous surf could cause further damage.
People who are planning on fishing, swimming and boating have been warned of strong and dangerous winds.
Wind gusts of 111 km/h were recorded at Molineux Point at 9.34pm, while shortly before that, gusts of 94 km/h were recorded at Sydney Airport around 9.20pm.
The Bureau of Meteorology's Jackson Browne said winds will ease throughout the day.
Mr Browne said that Sydney could only expect "nuisance showers" today as the rain system moves out to sea — but the flood risks remain.
"Thankfully the falls out towards the Hawkesbury and Nepean catchment are on the order of around 25mm to 40mm," he said.
"But it's important to remember they did suffer heavy falls in the 24 hours previous, hence why that river system is back in major flooding."
A separate severe weather warning for damaging and hazardous surf is currently in place for the Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast.
The bureau expects areas which may be affected to include: Gosford, Maitland, Sydney, Penrith, Parramatta, Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Batemans Bay, and Goulburn.
The BoM says heavy rainfall is no longer expected on Wednesday and has been removed from the current warnings but the coastline copped a drenching on Tuesday night, with moderate falls showing on the radar.
Communities in the region are already facing being cut off, with floodwaters isolating Mulgrave.
Major flooding is also occurring at Wallacia, with moderate flooding recorded at Menangle Bridge and Camden.
There's also been a moderate flood warning update for the St George's Basin are with Island Point Rd approaching a peak and the Sussex Inlet may peak at the moderate flood level, with evacuation orders in place for residents in both areas.
