NSW has recorded a new case of COVID-19 after a hotel quarantine worker tested positive, ending the state's almost month-long streak of no locally acquired cases.
Health Minister Brad Hazzard said on Sunrise on Thursday morning that the woman from Minto in Sydney's south-west worked at two CBD hotels, one of which is a police quarantine hotel.
"A 1.22am, I was advised in writing that we had found one case here in Sydney of COVID-19," he said.
"We had up until 8pm to last night, we would have been saying today is a 26 day without any cases, but we now have one case. She worked at the Novotel and the Ibis at Darling Harbour."
Mr Hazzard told radio station 2GB it was "too early to know" whether the woman contracted the disease from an overseas traveller at the hotel.
"We think she does domestic work in the hotel," he said.
Anyone who worked at the Ibis hotel on November 27 and the Novotel between Saturday November 28 and Monday November 30 is being asked to get tested immediately and self-isolate until getting a result.
In addition, Mr Hazzard said anyone in Minto or south-western Sydney with symptoms should get tested.
"She travels normally from Minto to Central and then on the light rail from Central to Darling Harbour," he said.
"If she was potentially infectious for those days we'd certainly be asking people who travelled on those lines if they've got any symptoms at all [to] get tested.
Mr Hazzard played down the seriousness of the positive case as he backed the state's contact tracers and health authorities.
"We've been doing it for 10 months we're quite confident we'll manage it," he said.
The woman's five family members were tested overnight and all returned a negative result for the virus.
