OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Throughout the day Tuesday, it was tough to get anywhere, but it was doable.
Part of that was due to light traffic on the roadways.
"It's still a little bit treacherous out there right now, it helps that it's the time it is right now, right between the holidays, we don't have kids in school, we've got people that have time off for the holiday and because of working from home from covid and things like that,” said Todd Pfitzer, City Engineer in Omaha.
"We had some advance warning with the storm that's coming and that always seems to help out as well," said Cpt. Matt Sutter, with the Nebraska State Patrol.
The advance warning allowed the City of Omaha to prepare. They started dropping brine on the roads Monday morning, which makes it easier for the plows to sweep the snow off the streets.
But with constant snowfall seemingly all day Tuesday, the roads are covered.
"There's snow on the ground, it's coming down fast enough that it's pretty much impossible to keep the road scraped down to the pavement, so there are slippery areas,” said Pfitzer.
As the day progressed, the interstate got a bit better, but you could by no means cruise like you normally would.
Sutter said 55 MPH is the absolute maximum you can safely drive.
"A lot of the problems that we see with people sliding off the road, it is do to people going too fast in those lanes that aren't completely clear yet," said Sutter.
And if you must go out late, leave early.
"If you do have activities tonight, just make sure you allow yourself plenty of time if you do have to be out there, you're not going to be able to travel the normal speeds you would on a normal day," Sutter said.
