Clippers reflect on historically bad day at the office: ‘We’re all human’ - OCRegister

Look, it happens, Reggie Jackson told reporters logged onto Zoom.

Not often does it happen quite as it did Sunday, but still, some days are better than others. And some are worse.

“Yeah, I mean we’re all human,” said Jackson, who contributed eight points on 3-for-6 shooting to the Clippers’ record-setting 124-73 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, in which their 77-27 halftime deficit goes down as the largest at the break in the NBA’s shot clock era, which began in 1954-55.

The blowout defeat came on the heels of the Clippers’ pair of esteem-building victories against the Lakers and Denver Nuggets to open the season. But it also came the day after members of the team celebrated a delayed Christmas, having rescheduled the holiday on account of their Christmas game in Denver. And it came at 12:30 p.m., proving that not everyone is a morning player.

“I mean, I take full responsibility,” said Clippers star Paul George, who finished with 15 points on 4-for-13 shooting. “I enjoyed my Christmas Day yesterday, today just popped up on me a little too fast. I’ll take full ownership for that, coming out and being prepared to play today.”

“There probably are some challenges,” Jackson said of the Clippers’ mind state entering Sunday’s game. “But fans watching and all those we’re entertaining, no one cares, so that’s unfortunate. That’s just how the business goes and, on our part, we have to be professionals — the energy may or may not have been off a little bit today, but we’ve got to find a way to come out here and compete.”

Things went sideways and then downhill fast for the Clippers on Sunday, when Dallas launched itself to a 36-13 first-quarter lead that ballooned to the historic 50-point halftime advantage.

“We’re gonna watch film, try to find a way to get better, move on from this one and get ready for our next opponent,” Jackson said. “But most importantly, our biggest opponent which is ourselves each and every day.

“This game kind of emulates life and the biggest opponent in life is yourself,” the 10th-year guard continued. “You gotta look at yourself in the mirror, you gotta figure out a way to be better, and that’s the goal.

“You’re either going forwards or you’re going backwards, so we’re just trying to take baby steps, continue to move in the right direction, bringing it together as a collective whole. And hopefully as the Los Angeles Clippers, we can find a way to continue to push towards the goal that we have ultimately for ourselves.”

PG’s T.O. TROUBLE

George scored the first two points of the game, draining a 19-foot step-back. His reverse layup with 8:11 to play in the first quarter were the Clippers’ only other points to that point, as the Mavericks built a 10-4 lead.

George also committed two of his four turnovers in that span, both of which Dallas converted into scores, helping to trigger the avalanche that was building. Similarly, his other two turnovers also led to the Mavericks scoring, contributing to their 22 points off turnovers.

Early on this season, George — who is averaging a team-best 23.7 points and 5.3 assists through three games — also is averaging 5.0 turnovers, a team and career high.

He’s aware of the trend, he said, and believes he’ll figure out a way to curtail it.

“I think just valuing the possession,” he said. “It’s all I got to do is value the possession. And just sometimes having more of an aggressive mentality, at all times, it is just what I got to carry into every game.”

Tyronn Lue concurred.

“Just being decisive with what he wants to do, not thinking, not guessing, just being aggressive and then making the right play like he’s been doing,” the Clippers’ new coach said. “Just we can’t have the careless turnovers when we’re kind of like indecisive with what we want to do, so we’ll clean those up.”
