Crashes spark holiday season road mayhem - Herald Sun

Major freeways around the city are in gridlock, with traffic banking up after a series of serious crashes during the holiday peak.

Major Melbourne roads have been brought to a standstill after two serious collisions halted traffic on the West Gate and Monash freeways.

Three people have been taken to hospital following a six-car collision that stopped outbound traffic on the West Gate Freeway at about 11am on Tuesday morning.

All three people are being treated for non-life threatening injuries while all outbound lanes remain closed as emergency crews work to clear the scene of a crash near Montague St.

Victoria Police are warning commuters of “significant delays” as crews work to clear the site.

Drivers have been urged to avoid the outbound area between the Domain Tunnel and Montague St, with those gridlocked inside the tunnel advised to exit at Kings Way and detour through South Melbourne.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the West Gate Bridge altogether as delays from the Montague Street crash have been compounded by annual works on the bridge.

Meanwhile, a woman is also in critical condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital after a crash in Docklands on Tuesday morning.

Paramedics were called at about 10.45am before the woman was taken to hospital along with two other men.

It comes as all city-bound lanes of the Monash Freeway were closed overnight following another crash at Springvale Road that has left a man fighting for his life.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said it was believed two cars were “racing” towards the city as they wove and changed lanes before the crash at about 10.45pm.

It is believed one of the drivers was racing in a Toyota Camry before losing control of the vehicle and crashing into a pillar on the Springvale Road overpass in Mulgrave.

The other vehicle, possibly a white Ford utility, fled the scene of the crash after it was seen racing alongside the Camry between Wellington and Springvale roads.

“Please avoid the Monash freeway if you’re heading into the city and use the Princes Highway instead”, a traffic alert said.

A Victoria Police spokesman also confirmed the investigation into the Monash Freeway wreck is ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the smash or has dashcam footage should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
