How Victoria will close its border to New South Wales by Saturday - ABC News

It's been barely a month since the border reopened between Victoria and New South Wales, but it will be shut again from 11:59pm on Friday, this time from the Victorian side.

Acting Premier Jacinta Allan said the difficult decision was made based on public health advice, after New South Wales recorded 10 new coronavirus cases today.

Victoria has now recorded eight new coronavirus cases in the past two days as part of an outbreak authorities believe is linked to a traveller who returned to Victoria from NSW.

"We have to do everything we possibly can to lock in the situation we have here in Victoria, keep ahead of where the case numbers might be, particularly in light of the case numbers coming out of New South Wales," Ms Allan said.

What does this mean if I'm getting back today or tomorrow?

Victoria's border has already been effectively closed to Greater Sydney, the Northern Beaches and the NSW Central Coast regions.

From 11:59pm tonight, the border is already closing to those arriving from the Blue Mountains and Wollongong local council areas too as they move into the Red Zone risk category.

Department of Health and Human Services COVID-19 response commander Jeroen Weimar said Victorians arriving back before 11:59pm tonight from the rest of NSW (designated Green Zones) would need to take a test as soon as they returned, but would avoid the need to quarantine for 14 days.

"Any Victorian who is returning from the Green Zone in NSW today until midnight tonight, they should get home, get tested and isolate until they get a negative test result," he said.

"Any Victorian travelling from the Green Zone tomorrow, or travelling today from Wollongong and the Blue Mountains, you need to get home, get tested and isolate for 14 days."

What about after the border closes?

From 11:59pm on Friday, January 1, every Victorian arriving back from any part of New South Wales will be required to enter hotel quarantine for a fortnight.

"Obviously this is going to cause some disruption for Victorians who may be holidaying, we do apologise for this disruption, however as I said, these difficult decisions are about protecting our community," Ms Allan said.

The Government said the border would remain open to border bubble communities, with more details on how that works set to be announced shortly.

What about travellers from Canberra and Queensland?

Ms Allan said there was a set of existing exemptions for people travelling, for example, by road from Queensland or who had medical reasons for their cross-border travel.

"They'd have to go through the Department of Health and Human Services to apply for that exemption," she said.

Mr Weimar said Victoria would continue to treat Canberra and the ACT as a Green Zone.

"So people will be able to continue to travel from Canberra into Victoria, they'll need to apply for a Green Zone permit that will entitle them to do so," he said.

Mr Weimar confirmed that travel could occur by road.
