Serious collision shuts West Gate Freeway outbound near Montague Street - NEWS.com.au

Holiday-makers hoping to escape Melbourne for New Year's celebrations have been hit with more pain with a serious crash shutting the West Gate Freeway.

It’s believed six vehicles were involved in the smash, which occurred near the Montague Street off ramp just before 11am on Tuesday.

Delays on the West Gate and Monash freeways stretched back more than 8km to past the Yarra Boulevard exit with all outbound lanes closed.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said three people had been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A woman in her 60s, who was trapped for some time, was taken to hospital in a stable condition with upper body injuries.

A man in his 20s was also in a stable condition with upper body injuries, while another man was also taken to in a stable condition.

A police spokeswoman said there were significant delays while crews worked to clear the scene.

Motorists were urged to avoid the outbound lanes of the West Gate Freeway between the Domain Tunnel and Montague Street.

The Department of Transport said all outbound lanes were reopened just after 1pm after being closed for more than two hours.

The latest crash comes after a horror few days on Melbourne freeways with holiday-makers already suffering through hour-long delays due to annual maintenance on the West Gate Bridge.

Three out of the five outbound lanes have been closed for the works with motorist urged to use the M80 Ring Road and Tullamarine Freeway as alternatives.

The Monash Freeway inbound has also been closed for the past two mornings due to serious collisions.

A man is fighting for life in hospital after crashing into a concrete pillar under the Springvale Road overpass while “racing” another car late on Monday night, with the road closed until 10.30am on Tuesday.

Police are still searching for a white sedan that was speeding alongside the man at the time of the crash.

The freeway was also closed on Monday morning after an allegedly stolen car crashed between Springvale and Blackburn roads, with four offenders seen running from the vehicle.

Police said on Tuesday the offenders were still on the run.

Any witnesses or motorists with dashcam vision of the incidents have been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
