NSW hotel quarantine worker in Sydney tests positive to COVID-19

The NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has confirmed a Sydney hotel quarantine worker has tested positive for COVID-19, ending the state's 26-day streak without any locally acquired cases.

Mr Hazzard said the woman worked at the Novotel and Ibis hotels in Darling Harbour and her test results came in just before 2:00am this morning.

"I was formally advised in writing that we had found one more case in Sydney of COVID-19," he said.

"We would've been saying today was our 26th day — it is our 26th day  without any cases, but we now have one case."

Mr Hazzard said he "very much" doubted that the new case would threaten any of the easing of restrictions announced yesterday and health authorities have been preparing for another case.

"We're in the middle of a pandemic, one has to expect it," he said.

He said authorities were already checking in with close contacts and would make further announcements later today.

"The good news is her five family members were tested overnight and they were negative - that's a good outcome," he said.

He said health authorities would like to speak to anyone who worked at the Ibis Hotel on November 27 or at Novotel between November 28-30.

"We'll do the tracking and tracing... hopefully it'll all be OK."
