“The bridge is closed in both directions due to a multi vehicle crash and car fire,” warned Live Traffic Sydney.

“Avoid the area and use Sydney Harbour Tunnel instead.”

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 7am after three vehicles collided in the citybound lanes of the bridge, causing one to flip and catch fire.

The fire was extinguished and with two drivers - a man and a woman - were treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of a van that was involved in the crash was trapped for some time before being freed by rescuers.

He was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Matt Sigmund said the driver of the car that burst into flames made it out of their vehicle before it caught fire.

He added the driver of the van was also lucky to escape.

“Crews on arrival reported thick black smoke coming from one of the vehicles and we had heard reports of persons still in the vehicles,” Mr Sigmund told Sunrise.

“The driver that was trapped in the van is really lucky to have escaped at this stage.

“One of the operators that works at the traffic management centre - they have a depot on the bridge.

“The traffic commander from that depot actually drove up at the time of call, the van was located next to the car that was involved on fire, he hooked that van up and dragged it away from the car that was on fire.

“That van was the vehicle that had the person entrapped and it took some time to get that person out.”

NSW Ambulance Inspector Giles Buchanan praised the efforts of bystanders who assisted the drivers involved.

“A number of bystanders and other emergency service workers who risked their lives to assist these patients are absolute heroes, we can’t thank them enough,” he said.

“One of the vehicles was well alight when we arrived on scene, it was an extraordinary effort to get the patient out of the vehicle safely.

“We urge all motorists to drive to the conditions especially in this treacherous weather.”

Sydney traffic nightmare

The bridge is closed in both directions, with traffic heavy on all major routes approaching the Harbour Bridge, including the Gore Hill Freeway, Military Road, Western Distributor and Victoria Road.

“Motorists are advised to avoid travel towards the city and delay their trip,” Live Traffic Sydney said.

“Those travelling towards the city should allow plenty of extra travel time and consider using the Sydney Harbour Tunnel or Anzac Bridge as an alternative.”

Buses in the area are also diverting away from the bridge. Trains continue to run across the bridge.

Trains and buses delayed

Sydneysiders had earlier been warned to expect disruptions to public transport routes after severe weather warnings were issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.

Significant delays and cancellations are expected on most Sydney Trains, TrainLink Intercity and regional trains on Monday.

“The impact of debris and unprecedented rainfall can be seen across the rail network, and has forced trains to run at much lower speeds,” Transport for NSW said.

Commuters are urged not to travel unless it is “absolutely necessary”.
