A 32-year-old woman has been left with serious injuries after being attacked by a shark at a beach south of Adelaide, according to paramedics.
Key points:
- A woman was bitten on the head by a shark at Port Noarlunga
- Authorities say her injuries are serious but not life-threatening
- They say people have returned to the water after a search failed to locate the shark
The SA Ambulance Service said they received a report that the woman had been bitten on the head at about 1:20pm near the Port Noarlunga Jetty.
A spokesperson said the woman was taken to the Flinders Medical Centre.
SA Police said the woman's injuries were not life-threatening.
In a statement, a police spokesperson said emergency services evacuated people from the water while a search to locate the shark was undertaken.
"Members of the public have since returned to the water after the search failed to locate the shark," they said.
Charlieze Nalzare said she was on the beach when she heard people screaming for help.
"We were on our way into the water and then one of the girls from the club came down and said 'can you get out?'," she said.
"This is our regular beach so it's kind of scary knowing that could have been us."
Eric Tink said he heard from other witnesses that the woman had jumped off the jetty before the attack.
"We got to the beach while she was being carried up here," he said.
"A few of the people said she was jetty jumping and it's happened just to the right of the jetty, in between the reef and the shore which is pretty rare.
"Everyone panicked and got out the water."
Local Tom Bearne said the incident was "pretty horrifying".
"I've never seen anything like that down here as long as my life and I've lived down here my whole life," he said.
The attack comes less than two weeks after a fatal incident near Streaky Bay on South Australia's west coast, in which 55-year-old surfer Tod Gendle was attacked by a shark at Granites Beach.
It was the second fatal incident on the state's Eyre Peninsula this year after local teacher Simon Baccanello was attacked by a shark near Elliston, about 120km from Streaky Bay.
Last month, a woman also suffered leg injuries when she was attacked by a shark while swimming near the jetty at Beachport in the state's south-east.
