Two men have been arrested on the NSW Mid North Coast after shots were fired from a Mercedes ute along a major highway and a body was found on the side of a road.
The two men were arrested near a riverbank behind a Big W in Kempsey, with heavily armed police taking the pair into custody after an hours-long manhunt.
Police have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.
The series of events began in the early hours of this morning when several shots were fired from a black Mercedes dual cab ute on the M1 at Coopernook, Kundabung, Fernbank Creek Road in Port Macquarie and the Telegraph Point area.
One of the bullets grazed a man who was driving in Coopernook.
He was assessed by paramedics and had suffered minor injuries. He has since been discharged from hospital.
A bullet also hit a police car that was attempting to stop the Mercedes on the M1 around the Fernbank Creek Road area.
Police believe four cars were hit in total in the shootings, which they are treating as random.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Scott Tanner also said a man's body was found on the side of the road at Fernbank Creek Road in Port Macquarie this morning.
"At this stage, we don't know if it is linked with this incident," he said.
Investigators are treating the man's death as suspicious, but have not yet linked the crime scenes as they are still being processed by forensic officers.
Police have combed the multiple crime scenes stretching almost 100km from Coopernook to Kempsey today during investigations.
Operations are now shifting to locating the firearms police believe were used in the shooting.
They believe there was more than one gun involved.
Tanner said earlier that the ute was found abandoned at Wayne Richards Park in Port Macquarie.
He later confirmed that the car had not been reported as stolen.
The men are expected to be taken to Kempsey Police Station, where they are likely to be charged after police inquiries.
Investigators are still trying to determine the men's links to the area of the alleged crime.
