The senior Air Force officer recently appointed as the National Cyber Security Coordinator has been recalled to Defence to deal with what the department describes as a "workplace matter".
Key points:
Air Marshal Darren Goldie, Australia's National Cyber Security Coordinator, has been recalled to Defence for a workplace matter
- Department of Home Affairs Deputy Secretary of Cyber and Infrastructure Security Hamish Hansford will act in his role in the interim
- Air Marshal Goldie was appointed to the role in July and has led responses since to major national cyber incidents
In a statement, the Australian Defence Force said "National Cyber Security Coordinator, Air Marshal Darren Goldie, AM, CSC, has been recalled to Defence to deal with a workplace matter related to his time in Defence".
"He is currently on leave. While the matter is under consideration it would be inappropriate to comment further," the statement said.
"The welfare of our people remains our priority and it is requested that Air Marshal Goldie's privacy is respected at this time.
The ABC has confirmed Defence first became aware of a complaint concerning alleged past behaviour by Air Marshal Goldie in the past week.
Defence Minister Richard Marles and Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil were then informed before the process began to return the former RAAF Air Commander to Defence, where the matter can be dealt with under the ADF's disciplinary system.
The government said in a statement that Ms O'Neil was notified that Air Marshal Goldie had been recalled and Department of Home Affairs Deputy Secretary of Cyber and Infrastructure Security Hamish Hansford would act as National Cyber Security Coordinator in the interim.
More recently, Air Marshal Goldie had taken the lead on large national cyber security responses including Optus's nationwide shutdown and the DP world cyber attack that closed ports across the country.
Appointed to the job in July this year, Air Marshal Goldie has had an "extensive 30-year career with the Royal Australian Air Force, joining in 1993", according to the Home Affairs website.
When the Air Marshal was announced in the national cybersecurity role this year, Ms O'Neil said his appointment was "a really important piece of the jigsaw puzzle is being put in place".
At the same press conference of the minister's remarks, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that the Air Marshal stood out to him as "someone who had that proven record of leadership, of being able to coordinate across the security space, in our defence forces".
Mr Albanese went on to say that he believed Air Marshal Goldie was "an outstanding choice" and was "very pleased" with his appointment.
