Man charged over Ashcroft fatal crash had never held a licence: police - Sydney Morning Herald

A 27-year-old man was allegedly driving more than 45km/h over the speed limit and had never held a driver’s licence when he crashed a car, killing two boys, in Sydney’s south-west this week, police say.

Sadlier man Nicholas Thew will face Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday after being charged with nine offences related to the crash in Ashcroft on Monday.

Footage from the crash site shows a Ford Falcon leaving the road and hitting a power pole and then a tree on the residential street. The crash tore the sedan in two, with one of the boys thrown about five metres by the impact. The two boys killed were aged 13 and 14 and cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Thew and Anthony Morris, 23, were arrested at Wetherill Park police station about 12.30pm on Tuesday after the pair allegedly pulled themselves from the wreckage and fled the crash scene.

They were taken to Liverpool Hospital under police guard to be assessed for injuries they allegedly sustained during the crash.

Thew has since been released from hospital and police charged him with two counts of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death while speeding 45km/h over the limit; two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death; and two counts of failing to stop and assist after a vehicle impact causing death.

He was also charged with driving while never being licensed, causing bodily harm by misconduct, and negligent driving occasioning death.

Police allege Thew and Morris were in the front seats of the grey Ford Falcon when it lost control on Maxwells Avenue at 10.55am.
