A Sydney man has been arrested and charged with murder after police found human bones in a burnt-out tree trunk more than 280 kilometres away in NSW’s Central West.
After an extensive search involving police divers and the dog squad, strike force detectives discovered a number of bones on a property north-west of Mudgee, where 53-year-old David Leonard Collisson was last seen more than two weeks ago.
The bones are believed to be human and have been sent for further forensic examination.
Collisson was reported missing on October 15 following his release from a two-decade prison sentence for the murder of 17-year-old high school student Shahab Kargarian in 2000.
Kargarian was enjoying take-away with his girlfriend at Greenwich Point when two men approached and demanded his wallet. The high school student was shot twice and died at the scene.
“This was a cold-blooded, callous and cruel shooting of a defenceless young man in circumstances where there was no warrant whatsoever for [Collisson’s] action,” Justice Anthony Whealy said as he sentenced Collisson to 24 years’ jail with a minimum non-parole period of 18 years.
“He determined to end this young man’s life and kept firing until he had achieved his object.”
Collisson pleaded not guilty to the murder and maintained his innocence throughout the trial and sentencing.
On Saturday morning, a 33-year-old man was arrested at Maroubra police station. He was charged with murder, acquiring a firearm and ammunition subject to prohibition order, holding a shortened firearm without authority, and possess ammunition without a permit.
The man will face Parramatta Local Court on Sunday, where police will allege he fatally shot Collisson at the property over a dispute.
Investigations under Strike Force Utyana are continuing.
