Sydneysiders warned of major traffic chaos across city's busiest weekend in years - 9News

Sydneysiders are in the midst of a mega weekend of concerts, sporting events and WorldPride celebrations that may prove a traffic nightmare for motorists.

The city is a hub of activity with a plethora of events from Friday night though to Sunday making for its busiest weekend in years.

Already a bumper crowd flocked to Olympic Park's Accor Stadium for the Harry Styles concert on Friday night with fans toughing out the rain and lining up from the early hours of the morning to see the international pop star.

Here is everything you need to know about the chaos this weekend:

Sydney Olympic Park

Sydney Olympic Park is set to be a hub of activity with Harry Styles concerts at Accor Stadium on Friday and Saturday drawing or set to draw more than 70,000 attendees apiece.

The NBL Championship Series game one between Sydney Kings and New Zealand Breakers also took place at Qudos Bank Arena on Friday night.

While across Saturday and Sunday, there'll be '90s boyband Backstreet Boys concerts at Qudos Bank Arena, which has a capacity of 24,000.

Transport for NSW expects more than 100,000 people to head to Sydney Olympic Park tonight alone.

Concertgoers are urged to catch public transport this weekend including trains and major event buses to and from Sydney Olympic Park to avoid major traffic delays and parking stress as there are limited options.

"Concert-goers should plan to arrive early to avoid the increased demand on public transport and heavy traffic, particularly during the busy Friday evening peak," Transport for NSW Chief Operations Officer Howard Collins said.

"Queuing should also be expected for services as customers head home each night.

"There are many venues to enjoy in the Sydney Olympic Park precinct before and after each concert.

"Gates open from about 5pm for each show so aim to arrive early. Avoid delays exiting car parks and queues for transport services after the shows – many venues are extending night-time trading."

Sydney Showground

Not only will Sydney Olympic Park host major musical talent this weekend, but the heart of Sydney will be bustling too.

Taiwanese singer Jay Chou will perform at Giants Stadium at Sydney Showground, not far from Olympic Park, tonight.

The venue has a capacity of 24,000.

Bondi Beach and CBD

It is also the final weekend of WorldPride with a plethora of events set to take place.

Tonight, Bondi Beach will be a sea of colour with the beach becoming a club dance floor for one night only with Australian DJs performing, as well as international pop star Nicole Scherzinger taking to the make-shift stage on the sand.

Around 15,000 are expected to attend.

Oxford Street will also be closed to cars between College Street and Flinders Street over the weekend - Saturday between 12pm and 1am and Sunday between 10am and 10pm -for the WorldPride Oxford Street Party and Pride Villages.

Traffic will be diverted via Kings Cross or Surry Hills during the closures and motorists are advised to allow extra time as delays will spill onto detours like Cleavland Street, William Street and Darlinghurst Road.

Closures and clearways for Pride Villages on Riley Street, Crown Street and surrounding local roads remain in place until 4.30am Monday.

Sydney Harbour Bridge and CBD

Meanwhile, on Sunday some of the biggest traffic delays between the north and south of the city will occur as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Cahill Expressway close from 4am to 11.30am for the WorldPride march kicking off at 7am.

Pride marchers will start at North Sydney and end at the Domain and Hyde Park.

Around 50,000 people are expected to attend.

"Public transport travel to and from the Harry Styles concerts at Accor Stadium and three WorldPride events – the Pride March, Bondi Beach Party and Rainbow Republic – is made even easier with the cost of transport included in event tickets," Collins said.

"Attendees just need to show their event ticket or Pride March wristband to Transport for NSW staff when boarding services.

"For Pride March participants, trains will run frequently to North Sydney station which is a short walk from the start area."

Buses will terminate on each side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in North Sydney and the CBD during the duration of the Pride March but trains will still be running.

And finally, on Sunday night, the WorldPride Closing Ceremony, Rainbow Republic, will take place in the Domain.
