A fisherman has told of being trapped on an island in Western Australia injured and bleeding after a shark attack.
Adam Norton, 32, said the predator circled his boat for hours, blocking his only way out.
Norton, from Port Hedland, said the shark bit him twice while he was on a fishing trip with friends in the remote Montebello Islands Archipelago off the Pilbara Coast in WA's north-west.
"I hopped in the water to walk to shore, that's when it bit me," he said.
"I started to run to shore and that probably stirred it up again and that's when it bit me again."
Norton, who thinks the animal was a lemon shark, was stuck on the sand for hours.
The closest hospital was more than 100 kilometres away and helicopters were unable to land.
A boat finally arrived about midnight with powerful painkillers, which he said "did absolutely nothing" thanks to the pain he was in.
Norton was then flown to Karratha Health Campus, two and a half hours from Port Hedland.
By that time it was seven hours since he was bitten.
"By the time i got to Karratha, I was not in a good way physically or mentally," he said.
"I was in a lot of pain."
He needed surgery but was told it could have been worse.
"The surgeon said I would of gotten a worse injury falling off a push bike so that made me feel better," he said.
