The man, who is believed to be in his 60s, was allegedly assaulted after an argument on Wallaby Road in Wheatsheaf, near Daylesford, about 10.28am.
Firefighters rushed to put out a fire in forest area near where the alleged assault occurred.
The man was treated at the scene for upper body injuries and airlifted to a hospital in Melbourne.
A 59-year-old Wheatsheaf man was arrested at the scene.
Police are working to establish the exact circumstances of the incident and the investigation is ongoing.
