A teenage girl is in critical condition and four other people have been rushed to hospital after a car crashed into another vehicle in Melbourne’s inner north, causing it to spin out of control and strike a pedestrian.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Lygon and Elgin streets in Carlton around noon on Saturday following reports of a two-vehicle collision and multiple injuries.
Police said one of the cars, a grey Volkswagen Passat, had been spotted moving erratically in the area before it crashed into an Alfa Romeo, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle and strike a pedestrian.
The driver of the Volkswagen was detained by bystanders until police arrived. He has been since arrested and placed under police guard at the hospital, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Major collision investigation unit Detective Sergeant Stephen Hill said a Passat driver, a 40-year-old man from Essendon, was helping police with their inquiries and had provided a sample for drug and alcohol testing. Investigations are continuing.
Hill said three people were in the Alfa Romeo, including a 16-year-old girl from North Brunswick who was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries, and a 61-year-old man from North Brunswick taken to the same hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The girl is in a critical condition and the man in a stable condition while Hill said a 53-year-old North Brunswick woman, also in the Alfa Romeo, was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after the crash.
A male pedestrian, who was hit by the Alfa Romeo as it spun out of control, suffered injuries including to his leg, and was taken to a hospital in a stable condition.
Witness Hayley O’Brien told Channel Nine that she saw people running down Lygon Street towards the crash in the moments after the collision.
“I saw the person was half under the car, half outside the car – it was a really gruesome scene,” O’Brien said.
Hill praised the people at the scene who helped until police arrived.
“I am in awe of any member of the public who stops at scenes like this – it is very confronting and very traumatic,” Hill said.
“Members of the public have spoken to the driver of the VW and kept him at the scene until police arrived. As to what took place, that is obviously part of the investigation.”
Aerial images of the scene obtained by Nine News show the badly damaged dark blue Alfa Romeo sedan near the busy intersection. Two of the vehicle’s doors appear to have come off their hinges.
The Passat can be seen on the nature strip separating two lanes of traffic nearby. Debris is scattered across the road and a traffic light appears to have been pushed to the ground.
Trams on routes 1 and 6 were diverted via Victoria Street, Elizabeth Street, Royal Parade, and Sydney Road between Stop 7 at RMIT University and Moreland Road following the crash.
A limited bus shuttle was also set up between Stop 120 on Brunswick Road and East Coburg and Moreland.
Hill said that it would take several hours to clear the crash scene and make it safe for people to use again.
The crash comes just hours after a man died after the car he was driving collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Murray Valley Highway and Old Barnawartha Road in Barnawartha, near Wodonga in the state’s north.
Police have asked that anyone with CCTV or dashboard camera footage of the incident or other witnesses to please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or confidentially make a report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
