Police have released a CCTV image of a man and a woman they are asking to come forward over the suspicious death of an elderly, retired solicitor whose body was inside his South Coogee apartment.
Officers discovered 77-year-old Peter McCarthy dead with severe facial and head injuries during a welfare check at 11.20am on Sunday in what Homicide Squad Commander Danny Doherty described as a "robbery that's turned into a brutal and severe bashing."
"This is a heartless crime, Mr McCathy was a vulnerable and defenceless elderly man," Detective Superintendent Doherty told a media briefing on Thursday.
Mr McCarthy's son James said in a statement that his family was devastated and still coming to terms with the loss of their father and grandfather.
"We have all been deeply affected by this tragedy, especially at what should be a time of celebration and joy this Christmas," James McCarthy said.
"We are grateful for the ongoing support from our family and friends and urge anyone in the community with information about the circumstances surrounding Dad’s death to please come forward and speak with police."
Police say Mr McCarthy was last seen at Club York, on York Street in Sydney's CBD, on the afternoon of December 16, between 12.30pm and 2.30pm. Detective Superintendent Doherty said the retiree frequented the venue at least three times a week.
He described Mr McCarthy as a "knockabout" man who "liked having a drink, liked having a bet down at the local" and was a well-liked man in his beachside suburb.
Detective Superintendent Doherty said there was a further, unconfirmed sighting of Mr McCarthy at his unit on December 17, but that was still being investigated.
He said Mr McCarthy was a "gregarious person" who was always in contact with people, and for others not to have heard from him for a number of days was unusual.
Detectives have released a CCTV image of a man and a woman on the platform of a train station who they believe may be able to assist them in the investigation.
The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, with a medium build and light brown hair. He is wearing black pants, black sneakers, a black ‘Raiders’ singlet top and glasses.
The woman depicted is described as being of Caucasian appearance, with a slim to medium build and light-coloured hair. She is wearing a black top, black hooded-jumper, black pants, black sneakers and a black face mask.
"We believe those two people may have information about Mr McCarthy's movements," Detective Superintendent Doherty said.
He said a brown satchel bag containing personal items, including Mr McCarthy’s mobile phone, appeared to have been stolen from the unit.
“The results from the post-mortem, together with initial inquiries from the crime scene, suggest Mr McCarthy was a victim of a violent and brutal assault and robbery," he said.
Police are now calling on Mr McCarthy's friends, neighbours and associates to help piece together his movements in the days leading up to his death.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
