What we learnt today

By Josefine Ganko

That’s where we’ll leave today’s live coverage of the continuing fallout from Saturday’s Bondi Junction stabbings and Monday’s Wakeley stabbings and public unrest.

Here’s a look back at today’s developments.

Firstly, here’s what we covered out of Wakeley:

  • A 19-year-old man was the first to be arrested under Strike Force Dribbs, which was formed to investigate the riot that erupted after a 16-year-old allegedly stabbed Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel during a sermon at a Wakeley church.
  • The father of the 16-year-old arrested over the stabbing spent the night of the attack too afraid to go home, before finding refuge at the Lakemba Mosque. It was also reported that the family had moved house to avoid being targeted.
  • NSW Police say 51 police cars were damaged in the riot on Monday night.
  • More police resources will be funnelled to western Sydney to prevent further violence, including 70 extra police on the streets to conduct high-visibility patrols, and 32 investigators assigned to investigate Monday’s riot.

And these were the updates in the Bondi Junction stabbing:

  • Westfield Bondi Junction will open to the public on Thursday for a “community reflection day”, with shops to remain closed. Businesses will be allowed to resume trade on Friday.
  • A 20-year-old man wrongly identified by the embattled Seven Network as the Bondi Junction mass murderer has engaged a high-profile legal team to threaten defamation action against the TV network.
  • A candlelight vigil will be held at Bondi Beach this weekend to allow the community to unite and mourn the victims of the Bondi Junction stabbing attack.
  • Six patients who were injured during the Bondi Junction stabbings have been discharged from hospital, while six others are still being treated, with only one still in intensive care.

Man arrested over Wakeley public order incident

By Josefine Ganko

Police have arrested a 19-year-old man at a home in western Sydney, the first arrest under Strike Force Dribbs.

The strike force was formed in response to the unrest on the streets outside Wakeley’s Christ the Good Shepherd Church on Monday night following the stabbing of two religious leaders.

On Wednesday afternoon, about 5.40pm, officers executed a search warrant at Doonside home in Sydney’s west, NSW Police confirmed.

Police then arrested a teenager, who was taken to Blacktown Police Station.

What to expect from tomorrow’s Bondi Junction Westfield reflection day

By Anthony Segaert

Come 11am tomorrow, the first members of the Bondi community will walk through the doors of Westfield Bondi Junction to commence what the centre’s management has called a day of reflection.

From 11am to 5pm, visitors will be welcomed to level four to sign a condolence book and talk with counsellors and other support workers.

The music that traditionally rings through the centre will be switched off, and the ads that play on the huge dangling screens will instead project a black ribbon.

No shops will be open during the day; they’ll be allowed to open on Friday. But it will be up to owners whether to do so.

Extra police resources directed to western Sydney

By Josefine Ganko

More police resources will be funnelled to western Sydney following the violence in Wakeley on Monday night.

In a statement, the NSW government welcomed the police’s establishment of Strike Force Dribs, which is tasked with increasing the police presence in the Fairfield council area to reassure and protect the community.

The move will put more than 70 extra police on the streets to conduct high-visibility patrols. Additional patrols were conducted last night.

Another 32 investigators have been assigned to look into the incident outside the Christ the Good Shepherd Church on Monday night in which police were attacked, resulting in injuries and damage to vehicles.

NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley added that “everyone has the right to go about their daily lives and practise their faith free from violence or intimidation.

“These extra boots on the ground will help provide calm and safety at a time when it’s needed most,” she said.

Any witnesses and anyone with mobile phone vision who has not yet spoken to police, should call police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

No words to describe Jade Young’s loss, says family

By Hannah Kennelly

Family members of Jade Young, one of the Bondi Junction victims, have expressed their heartbreak over her death.

“There are no words to describe the sense of loss, sadness and grief we have been experiencing after the shocking events at Bondi Junction,” the family said in a statement.

“The entire family is still in shock and coming to terms with the loss of Jade.”

The family confirmed Jade’s partner, Noel, and one of their daughters were present at the time of the attack. They said processing the grief and trauma would take time.

Verified fundraisers set up by the loved ones of victims Ashlee Good, Jade Young and Faraz Tahir have so far collected more than $700,000.

Young’s family said donations would “be used to provide Jade’s daughters with a secure future as they begin to adjust to life without their mum”.

‘Not what we represent’: Muslim community reeling from Wakeley attack

By Clare Sibthorpe

Members of the Islamic community have expressed shock over the livestreamed stabbing of Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel in Sydney’s west, saying it is not what they represent.

Police were patrolling several mosques on the city’s western outskirts on Wednesday.

As Muzzy Elsett left the Othman Bin Affan mosque in Cabramatta West, he said the attack at the Assyrian Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley was tragic, “like any attack”.

“We don’t preach harm on anyone,” he said. “It’s not what we represent. We don’t walk around trying to hurt people. If anything, in our religion in Islam, even smiling to a person is an act of charity. You get rewarded for that.”

Elsett did not condone the alleged actions of the 16-year-old attack suspect, who is Muslim, while also stressing the importance in his religion of not disrespecting the Prophet Muhammad.

He said many in the Islamic community knew about Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and his inflammatory views before the attack and wished his leaders had spoken to him instead of a teenager resorting to violence.

“We are happy to live our lives and practise our religion freely and others do the same – that’s the great thing about living in this country,” he said. “But I don’t think anyone in our community would go and tell a teenager to hurt someone.”

At the nearby Bonnyrigg Mosque, Bangladeshi refugee Alom Zir said he spent several years at the offshore immigration detention centre on Nauru and was overjoyed to make it to Australia, where he thought it was safe.

“I’m very upset this happened. This is not our religion,” Zir said. “We are about love [and] kindness.”

What is psychosis, what is schizophrenia, and what is the difference?

By Angus Thomson

Like millions of others in Australia and abroad, Cameron Solnordal watched the events of Saturday’s Bondi Junction attack in horror.

Having lived with schizophrenia since his mid-20s, Solnordal’s dread deepened as speculation swirled around the killer, 40-year-old Queenslander Joel Cauchi, and his diagnosis with the disorder as a teenager.

“I have schizophrenia, and I’d be trying to protect my family in that situation. I’d be running for my life … and I would be doing everything I could to stop someone bleeding to death,” Solnordal says.

Cameron Solnordal, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia in his mid-20s, has watched many negative stereotypes about people with the disorder play out this week.

Cauchi’s father told police his son had schizophrenia and had recently stopped taking his medication. His mother said she believed something must have triggered him into psychosis.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said police would look at what role Cauchi’s history of complex mental health issues had played, but admitted they “may not ever get an answer”.

What we do know is the killing of strangers by people with severe mental illnesses is extremely rare (about one in 14 million people a year), and often combined with other issues such as drug and alcohol use and homelessness.

So what is schizophrenia, what is psychosis, and what is the difference? Read the full story here.

French ambassador commends bravery of two citizens during attack

France’s ambassador to Australia has joined President Emmanuel Macron in commending two of the country’s citizens for their attempts to stop Joel Cauchi during his devastating attack on Westfield Bondi Junction on Saturday.

Pierre-Andre Imbert said he had personally conveyed his gratitude to construction workers Damien Guérot and Silas Despreaux for their bravery in using bollards and chains to try to stop Cauchi.

“I praise both men for showing courage in the face of violence,” he said in a statement this afternoon.

Guerot was dubbed “bollard man” after a short video showing him confronting the attacker on an escalator went viral online.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese offered him permanent residency after becoming aware he was on a work visa about to expire.
