Asbestos found in more playgrounds - news.com.au

Asbestos has been discovered at three more children’s playground in Melbourne after a father discovered the hazardous material at a park earlier in the week.

Just days after a parent discovered contaminated building materials in mulch at a playground in Spotswood, asbestos was discovered at playgrounds in Coburg North and Altona North.

Authorities are investigating whether contaminated mulch at the playgrounds is a result of illegal dumping.

Hosken Reserve in Coburg North has been undergoing an upgrade making it the second time this year traces of asbestos have been found there.

The playground is now fenced off while Merri-beck City Council remove the contaminated mulch.

Despite experts saying there was little risk to the community some residents have been wearing masks to protect themselves from inhaling any cancer-causing fibres.

Resident Margaret-Mary Cashin told 9News that authorities had been digging when they came across the asbestos.

“There are signs all over the place saying there is asbestos dust and there does not seem to be any consideration of the residents,” she said.

On Monday, resident Jason Murphy was at Donald McClean Reserve in Spotswood with his children when he noticed old building materials in the mulch.

One of the materials he found turned out to be asbestos.

Mr Murphy told 9News it was clear to him that material had been put through a mulcher.

Hobson Bay City Council taped off the play area at Donald McLean Reserve following the dangerous discovery and brought in a material hygienist to inspect the playground.

Hobson Bay City Council taped off the play area at Donald McLean Reserve following the dangerous discovery and brought in a material hygienist to inspect the playground.

The council said two types of mulch were used on the reserve, including a “recycled product around mature tree planting”, where the two pieces were found.

The council confirmed it was working with the EPA and the hygienists to inspect other sites where the mulch was used.
