Brittany Higgins calls out Anthony Albanese for ‘unacceptable’ act as she offers support to distressed domestic violence rally organiser - Sky News Australia

The No More: National Rally Against Violence demonstrations were spearheaded by advocacy group What Were You Wearing, of which Ms Williams is the founder.

Crowds gathered across Victoria, Queensland and the ACT to demand the government take stronger action to protect women and call for an end to gender-based violence as 27 women have been killed at the hands of men since the start of the year.

Sunday’s rally in Canberra became the scene of controversy when Mr Albanese claimed he asked if he and the Minster for Women Katy Gallagher could speak but was not granted permission.

“To be clear we did ask to speak, myself and Katy, and were told that that wasn’t possible and that’s fine, I respect the organisers right to do that,” Mr Albanese told rally attendees.

Ms Williams is heard telling the Prime Minister “that’s a lie, that’s a flat-out lie” before taking to Instagram with her rebuttal.

She argued Mr Albanese aggressively stated “I’m the Prime Minister of this country I run this country” when she asked the crowd if she should let him speak.

Ms Williams’ post received more than 570 comments including a message of love from Ms Higgins.

“I’m so sorry,” she wrote.

“This is unacceptable and I am heartbroken you were made to feel so small on a day you accomplished something so incredible. Sending love always.”

The rally organiser replied to Ms Higgins with a message of gratitude.

“Needed this, appreciate you💛,” Ms Williams replied.

In her post, Ms Williams took aim at Mr Albanese’s “entitlement” and his move to “diminish a vulnerable young woman”.

“To have him hear my lived experience, see my vulnerability and then have the audacity to lie was appalling,” Ms Williams said.

“I bursted into tears right next to him. The fact you continued to speak and didn’t mention me once nor apologise was appalling.”

Other Instagram users skewered Mr Albanese in the comments of Ms Williams’ post while some linked his rally blunder to other issues they had with Labor.

“’We demand the government do better’ that’s you man, you haven’t been the opposition for a while,” one Instagram user commented.

Another wrote: “Watching it all happen live was shocking but unfortunately not surprising".

“The way he was actually SCREAMING into the mic by the end, using his violent, aggressive male voice to list his achievement without acknowledging the every day work the womxn and DV/SV workers do was so telling," they continued.

“He lost my respect with his lack of action on Palestine, but now he's lost the country.”

Mr Albanese was repeatedly questioned about this interaction on Monday morning when facing a series of media grillings.

Sunrise host Nat Barr asked the Prime Minister if he attempted to pull rank on Ms Williams, but he dismissed the suggestion and said he wasn’t “getting into that sort of debate”.

‘Outrageous’: Albanese ‘had a tantrum’ when heckled at domestic violence rally

Mr Albanese was also questioned about Ms Williams' claim during his other morning show appearances including ABC News Breakfast and Nine's Today show.

He shrugged off the "liar" remark when asked by Today's Karl Stefanovic.

"I'm focused on the issue," the PM said.

"It was an emotional day for people and I get that on what is an emotional issue because women were saying yesterday, enough is enough.”

Alongside the Canberra rally, the regional cities of Bendigo, Geelong, Coffs Harbour and Sunshine Coast held demonstrations.

The Prime Minister said he would convene a meeting of the national cabinet on Wednesday to address domestic and family violence with state and territory ministers.
