A fundraiser to help the nine-month-old baby who was stabbed, and whose mother Ashlee Good died, in the Bondi Junction attack has yielded almost seven times its original goal.
The extraordinary show of generosity from Australians is intended to ensure Ms Good’s partner, Dan, and daughter, Harriet, will have “the freedom to go forward into the future without financial burden or worry”.
A GoFundMe page set up in the wake of the mass stabbing initially aimed to raise $100,000. At the time of writing, on Monday evening, it had raised a monumental $684,000, with almost 12,000 separate people having donated.
“This Go Fund Me page has been authorised by the family of Ashlee Good. It has been established to support Ash’s little girl, Harriet,” the page reads.
At the time it was set up, the nine-month-old girl was still in intensive care Sydney Children’s Hospital. Thankfully, her recovery has since proceeded well and she’s been released.
“Our hearts were broken beyond comprehension as we learned of the tragic loss of our beautiful friend, Ash, in the stabbing attack at Westfield Bondi Junction,” the fundraisers wrote to supporters.
“Ash was a ray of sunshine and positivity in every aspect of her life and died a hero saving her little girl from the most unspeakable evil.”
Ms Good tried to save her daughter after both of them were attacked by the knife-wielding attacker at Bondi Westfield in Sydney, handing the baby to two strangers.
The mum was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital in a critical condition but could not be saved, and died soon after arriving.
“The mum came over with the baby and threw it at me, and I was just holding the baby,” one of a pair of brothers told 9News after the attack.
“I just helped out, just holding the baby and trying to compress the baby, and same with the mother, trying to compress the blood from stopping and calling the ambulance and police.
“We just kept yelling out to get some clothes to help us compress and stop the baby bleeding.”
The combined efforts of Ms Good and the witnesses appear to have contributed to saving the child’s life. On Sunday, New South Wales Health Minister Ryan Park announced that Harriet had been discharged from hospital.
“In a positive development, I can confirm the child who has been receiving care at Sydney Children’s Hospital following last weekend’s events at Bondi Junction has been discharged home,” Mr Park said.
“She continues to receive care from the expert clinicians.”
The organisers of the GoFundMe for Ms Good’s family wrote that they’d been “overwhelmed” by the requests from “loved ones and strangers” to support her surviving partner and child.
“Being a mother to baby Harriet and partner to Dan was Ash’s whole life. Her love and commitment to them was evident to all who knew her,” they said.
“We are united in our devastation that her bright future was cut short in this way. Her beautiful and warm spirit, drive and energy inspired us all.
“These funds are being collected for the benefit of Dan and Harriet to give them the freedom to go forward into the future without financial burden or worry. We know that no amount of money will ever substitute her presence in their lives and thank you for your generous donations to date.”
The page was set up by Steve Foxwell, the general manager of a company with whom Ms Good had worked, Isagenix.
“It is of course open to anyone who knew and loved Ash and of course by members of the public who have been touched by her story,” it reads.
“Isagenix will ensure that these funds are paid in whole to Dan.”
