Weather event sparks warnings for 'dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding' across parts of NSW - 9News

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) warns the severe weather will get worse today before it gets better, forecasting conditions will begin to ease late on Saturday.

Severe weather warnings are already in place for parts of NSW, though a thunderstorm warning has been cancelled for Sydney as of this morning.

"Areas of heavy rain and gusty showers are forecast to develop south of about Newcastle during Friday, including over the ranges and tablelands," the BoM forecasts.

"Severe weather is expected to gradually shift south overnight, easing later on Saturday as the trough moves east to the Tasman Sea."

Heavy rainfall leading to possible flash flooding is forecast to develop from late morning for the southern parts of the Hunter to the Sydney Metropolitan, Illawarra, and Central Tablelands districts.

The weather system will then shift south overnight and into Saturday morning, while easing from the north.

"Six-hourly rainfall totals between 50 to 90mm are likely, reaching up to 130mm over the Illawarra escarpment. 24 hour totals of 70-120mm are also likely, reaching up to 150mm over the Blue Mountains and Illawarra escarpment," the BoM noted.

They also warned that the broad heavy rainfall could see local patches of intense rainfall which "may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding" between the Blue Mountains and Narooma from Friday evening into Saturday morning.

"Localised six-hourly rainfall totals between 90 to 150mm possible, reaching up to 220mm over the Illawarra escarpment," they forecast.

"Localised 24-hourly rainfall totals between 120 and 200mm are possible, and may reach up to 300mm over the Illawarra escarpment."

Multiple flood weather warnings are currently in place across parts of NSW, the ACT and Queensland.

Elsewhere in Australia, showers and storms are forecast for the far northern tropics, while warm winds are set to hit Western Australia's west. A high will keep elsewhere dry.
