Rainfalls of up to 300mm are expected across large parts of southeast Queensland and NSW over the next three days, meteorologist Ben Domensino has warned.
The drenching will move from southeast Queensland into NSW, with a flood warning for Western Sydney throughout Friday.

On Thursday, Domensino told Sunrise viewers the rain currently soaking southern Queensland is already moving south.
“At the moment, the thunderstorms have already started in southern Queensland,” Domensino said.
“Overnight, we had falls in excess of 100mm in parts of southeast Queensland, just to the southwest of Brisbane — that system will move its way down through NSW over the next few days.
“We’re looking at widespread rainfall totals of about 50mm to 100mm from southern Queensland over northeastern, central and southern NSW — we could have a few pockets where we see falls reaching around 100mm to 300mm — with most of the rain expected to fall between Friday and Saturday.”
Domensino said Sydney will be in the firing line of the weather system.
“What’s happening is the system is making its way down from Queensland and then a low-pressure trough near the coast is expected to intensify on Friday,” Domensino said.
“Sydney will see rain throughout Thursday and then start to pick up on Friday when, into the afternoon and the evening, we could have intense rain and damaging winds.”
The low-pressure system is drawing huge amounts of moisture from the Tasman Sea, where warmer water could be adding to the rainfall totals, Domensino said.
“The ocean water in the Tasman Sea is 1c to 3C warmer than average for this time of year ... that’s providing extra fuel for the rain-bearing system,” he said.
“We could see heavy rain, flash-flooding in the Hawkesbury, Nepean River system, and Illawarra, and damaging winds and hazardous surf over the next few days.”
