Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has responded to the claim he lied during a domestic violence rally over the weekend after footage revealed the exchange before he made his address.
On Sunday, during his speech outside Parliament House, Mr Albanese made the claim he was denied from speaking before Sarah Williams, the event organiser, accused him of making a “full out lie” before bursting into tears.
Then, on Monday afternoon, footage emerged from the No More: National Rally Against Violence demonstration the day before where Mr Albanese can be heard to say “Do you want me to speak or not? I'm the Prime Minister".
Williams took to social media that same day and said Mr Albanese was "abusing his power" by "aggressively stating" he was the prime minister, demonstrating his "entitlement" to speak at the rally.
She claimed in her statement Mr Albanese said: "I'm the Prime Minister of the country, I run this country".
Later on Tuesday, in a press conference in Brisbane, alongside Queensland Premier Steven Miles and Science Minister Ed Husic, the Prime Minister responded to a journalist’s question about Ms Williams’ claim.
“With regard to Sarah (Williams), I wish her well. I wish her well. People can see the video for themselves. They can see what people said and what people didn't say,” Mr Albanese said.
The Prime Minister then quickly moved on to discuss the jobs which will be created after unveiling a $1 billion investment into building a quantum computing in Brisbane and the broader economic benefits it would bring to Brisbane and Queensland.
Prior to Mr Albanese's retort on Tuesday, Defence Minister Richard Marles clapped back at the Opposition Leader Peter Dutton over his calls the Prime Minister should apologise “if he lied”.
"The Prime Minister obviously has had some serious allegations made against him: he's been called a liar and his word questioned,” Mr Dutton said in a press conference on Tuesday morning.
Speaking to Sky News on Tuesday afternoon, Mr Marles made the claim Mr Dutton was absent from the rally and it was “breathtaking” he would call on the Prime Minister to apologise over apparent dishonesty.
The Deputy Prime Minister then criticised Mr Dutton and said he went “as quickly as he could” to politicise Mr Albanese’s supposed dishonesty and seeks to “politicise everything”.
