Albanese’s bold declaration as he fails to name petrol price - Sky News Australia

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has declared he wants to serve a full second term in government if re-elected in 2025, with the PM not seeing his age of 60 as any impediment to a long period as the country's prime minister.

Fresh from a victory at the ALP national conference in Brisbane, where the party put the AUKUS nuclear submarine deal in its party platform delivering the PM a victory, despite a heated debate, Mr Albanese spoke to Sunday Agenda and confirmed he would serve a full term if re-elected at the next election.

But in the interview, Mr Albanese failed to name the petrol price when asked, with the price of a litre having recently rocketed up to $2.10 to $2.20 a litre.

Asked the petrol price, the PM said: "I don't go and fill up my car but it was around $1.80 last time I did".

The bowser price in much of Australia is presently $2.10-$2.20 it was pointed out to him.

Former prime minister Scott Morrison failed to name the petrol price when asked by Sky News at the National Press Club in February 2022.

When Mr Albanese was asked what could be done about the latest petrol spike he said: “That's about a global impact... we know the Russian invasion of Ukraine has had a major impact on the price of all energy including the price of oil and we need to do all we can to put lower pressure on inflation".

He said the government had a three pronged attack against inflation: producing a budget surplus, targeted cost of living relief and addressing skills shortages and supply chain issues.

Asked whether he believed Australia had seen its last interest rate rise in its current cycle, the PM said: "That of course is a decision of the independent reserve bank. What I'm confident of is we are managing fiscal policy in a way that is assisting the implementation of monetary policy”.

Asked about his future in the job, the PM said: “I've just got here 15 months ago. I have enormous energy for the task. One of the themes of this conference is Working for Australia. And that is the focus... of my government. Working for Australia to put in place a long term Labor government. That's my focus".

"Doing good government. Securing the support of the Australian people on the journey of change because if you don't change the world moves past you and we have enormous opportunities this decade to set Australia up for a bright future," he continued.

"We live in the fastest growing section of the world in human history.

"I'm very energised and when I was at the NATO summit recently I was certainly not one of the older leaders who was there.

"I have the great honour of being elected Prime Minister in May of last year. It's not something that when I went into parliament was on my to do list.

"It's a job I'm enjoying and regard as an incredible privilege. I love this country.

"I certainly will be going to the next election with the intention of fulfilling a term. Politics can change quickly of course and we take nothing for granted, certainly not the next election... but during the last term I spoke about plans for 2022 and beyond and beyond 2025."

Mr Albanese again confirmed he would not seek to legislate an Indigenous Voice to Parliament if the referendum on putting the voice in the constitution was unsuccessful.

"I think you have to respect the outcome of a referendum and Indigenous Australians themselves have asked for an enshrinement of a body in the constitution," he said.

"Your question draws out one of the great contradictions we've seen drawn out. Peter Dutton and the opposition say they support constitutional recognition tick tick same position. They say they support legislating the Voice.”

But the opposition did not want to see the Voice in the constitution.

"What's permanent is there is a body. The composition is subject to the parliament so there's no difference between the Liberals’ position and ours on whether parliament would determine the composition of the Voice," Mr Albanese said.

"The only difference is to whether the body can be abolished with a stroke of the pen and indigenous Australians have waited a long time for constitutional recognition.”
