A witness said he saw the man’s clothing stained with blood.

“Homicide squad detectives are investigating following the death of a man in Melbourne East this morning,” a police spokeswoman said.

“It’s believed a man was involved in a physical altercation with another man in Fitzroy Gardens about 6.50am. The man was treated at the scene, however passed away shortly after.”

Victoria Police said officers were not looking for anyone else over the incident.

A witness said police treated the wounded man for about 30 minutes before he succumbed to his injuries.

The other man, who has not been formally identified, was in an agitated state before being taken into custody.

Local man Nathanael Soplario said the death was unusual for the area, and the park was relatively busy at the time.

“[It’s] sort of scary that this thing happens,” he said.

About a dozen police and forensic specialists remained at the gardens on Monday morning, with a small tent set up behind police tape.

An officer dressed in a wetsuit waded into the shallow Dolphin Fountain, located in the centre of the gardens, just before 11am.

Police did not disclose what they were attempting to retrieve.

The officer was seen examining the edge of the fountain, dipping in and out of the pool while fishing out objects and perching them on the lip.

Runners and pedestrians had returned to the park on Monday morning, some peering briefly at the scene before going on their way.

The site police are examining sits just a few hundred metres from Parliament House on Spring Street.

Witnesses are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
