Former prime minister Scott Morrison is to take up a role with a leading Washington think tank as an adviser to the Centre for a New American Security.
Mr Morrison will join CNAS as part of its board of advisers. CNAS directors include former deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage and James Murdoch, son of News Corp chief Rupert Murdoch.
The appointment will further fuel expectations that Mr Morrison will soon resign from parliament, leaving open his southern Sydney seat for a byelection.
“As prime minister, Scott Morrison spearheaded the landmark AUKUS defence agreement and led his country’s efforts to deal with an increasingly aggressive China,” said Richard Fontaine, the CEO of CNAS.
“As the newest member of the CNAS board of advisers, his insights and expertise will strengthen the centre’s research and work. We look forward to his contributions.”
CNAS was established in 2007 by the Biden administration’s National Security Council Co-ordinator for the Indo-Pacific, Kurt Campbell.
The centre focuses on Asia and in particular the emergence of China as a global strategic power.
A goal of its Asia-Pacific Security program is to “devise a future path for America’s engagement of China that can expand bilateral co-operation in areas of shared strategic interest and encourage increasing accountability from the Chinese regime”.
It is funded from donations mostly from the defence sector.
