Tasmania Senator Jacqui Lambie has again given an impassioned plea to the Greens to end its blockade of the government’s housing fund.
The minor party joined with the Coalition and One Nation on Wednesday to block a government motion to rush debate on the $10 billion Housing Australia Future fund through the Senate.
The move drew massive criticism from the Jacqui Lambie Network and Labor who accused the Greens of joining an “unholy alliance” with the opposition.
But during a run-of-the mill doorstop in Parliament House on Thursday Treasurer Jim Chalmers was greeted and applauded by Senator Lambie over the budget and the housing fund.
“We appreciate your support for housing Jacqui,” Mr Chalmers said after they shook hands in front of the gathered media.
Senator Lambie then turned back and used the opportunity to launch into the Greens’ refusal to use its large balance of power to pass the bill.
“I tell you what as soon as we get those foundations done the better and everyday those Greens stop it is everyday those people out there are living in those bloody tents,” she said.
The Greens have defended the move to block the hours motion in the Senate on Wednesday and side with the Coalition and One Nation.
The minor party are demanding the fund be substantially increased by $4.5 billion annually, with up to $5 billion in direct spending on housing, along with a plan to coordinate a national rent freeze.
Greens housing spokesman Max Chandler-Mather has argued the fund should be spent to guarantee social and affordable housing rather than “gambling” the $10 billion on the stock market.
He also said the party remained “happy to negotiate” with the government.
But Senator Lambie stressed the need for the program to begin immediately, hitting out at the progressive party and accusing it of ensuring the country’s most vulnerable remain without a roof over their heads.
“I’m sick of hearing them cry like little babies, I’m sick of them bringing instability upon those who are already living in instability,” Ms Lambie told Sky News Australia on Thursday.
“They’re supposed to have the biggest social conscience, so they claim, up here in parliament and this is how they treating those people who are living in tents that are in absolute despair.
“This is absolutely disgraceful behavior by the Greens they’re so bloody poor, their performance is disgraceful.”
After the hours motion was voted down 42-23, the bill is unlikely to pass parliament this week.
The government's next opportunity to hold a vote on the bill will be in mid-June.
