Queensland man extradited, charged over decades-old sexual assault cold case - 9News

WA Police allege the 48-year-old man, who was 17 years old at the time, broke into a 23-year-old woman's home in Embleton, Perth in the early hours of Friday, April 17, 1992, before assaulting her at knifepoint.

He allegedly tied her up and repeatedly sexually assaulted her for over half an hour.

Police arrested the man at his Queensland home on Wednesday and extradited him to Western Australia on Friday. (Nine)

Police arrested the man at his Queensland home on Wednesday and extradited him to Western Australia on Friday to face two charges of aggravated sexual assault, and one charge each of aggravated burglary, deprivation of liberty and attempted rape.

A breakthrough in forensic and police technology led police to the discovery over three decades after the alleged crime.

They believe he was lying low until his arrest.

"Although these offences occurred over 31 years ago, we have remained committed to actively investigating them," Detective Inspector Darryl Cox from WA Police said.

"Advances in policing technology and forensics have enabled us to identify an alleged offender, track down their location and bring these matters before the courts." 

The man cannot be publicly identified as he was a minor when the alleged crime was committed.

He will face the Children's Court next week and did not apply for bail.
