Minister intervenes to allow Cairns family with autistic son to stay in Australia - 9News

Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has stepped in to allow a family, who had been living in Australia for more than a decade and were facing deportation, to stay in the country.

Parents Yoojin Yang and Hyusin Lim moved to Australia from Korea in 2013 and run a local cafe in Cairns.

Seongjae Lim was diagnosed with autism at the age of three.

Seven-year-old Seongjae, who was diagnosed with the condition when he was three, was deemed a burden on the taxpayer.

The case sparked outrage from Australia's autism community and an appeal from Australian actress and Heartbreak High star Chloe Hayden, who is autistic, for the minister to intervene.

An online petition in support of the family attracted more than 30,000 signatures.

In a letter received by the family yesterday, the Department of Home Affairs said Giles had personally considered their case.

The minister had decided to exercise his public interest power to overturn a decision by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and grant Seongjae a permanent Australian visa, the letter said.

Seongjae's mother Yoojin said she was grateful to the minister for his decision and for all of the support her family had received.

"As much as the love shown to Seongjae, I will do my best so that he can grow into a confident Australian who can help everyone," she said.

"The world is still worth living in and I think it will get better in the future."
