Police found themselves outnumbered by a group apparently bent on vigilante action.
Local Muay Thai gym owner Torin O'Brien had previously posted a $5000 reward on social media for information on youths believed to have robbed a home in town.
He today rallied alongside a crowd of anti-crime protesters at Central Park.
Some of those who attended the protests spilled onto the streets to hammer on the doors of those they believed responsible.
Police blockaded the crowd but were outnumbered by protesters.
Mobile phone footage shows the tense situation unfolding.
"Youse won't do your job properly, it's civilians doing your jobs for you," one protester is heard saying.
Others called for police to stand with the protesters to push for legislative change.
Police Minister Mark Ryan has asked Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll for a briefing.
