Footage of shark sighting emerges as search for surfer continues - 9News

Footage has emerged of an "enormous" shark lurking off South Australia's coastline as the search for a missing surfer enters its third day.

Fisherman Michael Scheffler and his group of friends were in a small boat off Port Drummond last month when he spotted the creature.

"Out of nowhere, just this majestic and rather enormous great white shark slowly came to the surface," he said.

"It was very inquisitive, very gentle in nature but enormous."

But it wasn't long before the group made the decision to flee.

"That was relatively eerie, to see a massive dorsal fin out of the water, you know, slowly accelerating as we did," he said.

Scheffler, who is a teacher at Port Lincoln High School, said he often saw sharks in the area.

Just up the coast at Elliston, a search is still underway for Simon Baccanello.

Police on Monday said they found a piece of wetsuit and small pieces of white polystyrene, which could be surfboard material.

Baccanello was at the back of a group of about a dozen surfers on Saturday when he was attacked, with no one else injured.

Extensive searches over the weekend turned up nothing but a surfboard with a large bite out of it, as locals began mourning the 46-year-old Elliston Area School teacher.

Support is being offered to his students and colleagues, who will return to school today.

Elliston is an isolated coastal town about 600 kilometres west of Adelaide with a population of less than 400.

The area is well-known for the high number of sharks off the coast.

However, this would mark the first fatal shark attack off the coast of South Australia since 2014, when another teacher was taken in the waters off Yorke Peninsula.
