NSW records 296 new cases and four deaths as concerns raised over teacher vaccinations - 9News

New South Wales has recorded 296 new local COVID-19 cases and four new deaths amid warnings as many as 3000 teachers remain unvaccinated.

There are now 480 patients being treated in NSW hospitals, 119 of whom are in ICU.

Hundreds of thousands of students in New South Wales will go back to the classroom tomorrow with years 2 to 11 returning to face-to-face learning.

But there are warnings many teachers could be absent because they are not yet fully vaccinated.

Teachers have been given until November 8 to have their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccination.

With the New South Wales Government moving forward the back-to-school date by up to a week not every teacher has had the chance, or the time, to be fully vaccinated.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet confirmed today that 95 per cent of school staff had so far declared they were fully vaccinated.

NSW Teachers Federation president Angelo Gavrielatos said based on that percentage there would be a shortage of 3000 teachers.

"That presents serious challenges in terms of the organisation of a school in terms of ensuring that we have staff in front of every classroom and our timetabled classes proceed unaffected," he told the ABC.

NSW Education said it was providing support to 160 schools who had indicated they required assistance with staffing.

Mr Perrottet said there was no doubt there would be challenges that came with the return to schools.

"I know there'll be issues from time to time, I accept that from the outset, but we're opening up, we want our kids back in the classroom as quickly as possible, it's good for parents, and it's good for our kids."

The latest figures released by NSW Health this morning show 93 percent of the state's eligible population aged over 16 have had their first coronavirus vaccine, while 84.4 percent are fully vaccinated.
