Quarantine-free travel with NZ to resume - Sky News Australia

Australians will be allowed to travel freely outside the country for the first time since March last year as Kiwis are granted quarantine-free travel to Australia.

Australians will be allowed to travel internationally for the first time since March last year while New Zealanders travelling to Australia will no longer have to quarantine from Monday.

The move allows fully vaccinated travellers to head overseas without seeking exemptions while Aussies and their families will be allowed to return from holidays without having to undergo 14-day isolation in certain states.

“This is wonderful news for Australians because Australians love to travel,” Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan said.

The Tourism Minister also said New Zealanders would be welcomed back to Australia quarantine-free adding the move was “welcome news” and an “important step” in reopening the Australian borders.

“The resumption of quarantine free travel from New Zealand to Australia is another important marker on our road to recovery and it will encourage more Australians to dust off their passport and plan their next holiday,” he said.

Mr Tehan said Australia would begin to ramp up tourism campaigns across the ditch in an attempt to kickstart the tourism industry.

“Tourism Australia will look to scale up its marketing activities in New Zealand, with an immediate focus on building confidence and broadening knowledge of the depth of Australia’s tourism offering,” Minister Tehan said.

New Zealand is the second largest source of tourists for Australia with Kiwi spending $1.6 billion while on holiday in Australia.

“Australia delivers what Kiwis want in a holiday, including safety and security, value for money and world class natural beauty and wildlife."

Kiwis looking to travel in Australia quarantine free will be required to provide proof of a negative pre-departure PCR test within three days of their arrival and will need to show evidence they are fully vaccinated with a TGA approved or recognised vaccine.

Mr Tehan said reopening the border would also allow for over 600,000 tourism employees to return to work.

“As we reopen the border those 660,000 jobs that our tourism sector employs obviously we will see those numbers grow back and we will see dollars in pockets,” he said.

The reopening of Australia’s borders will allow residents to travel outside of the country freely for the first time since the borders were slammed shut on March 20, 2020 due to the pandemic.

According to Tourism Australia, in the financial year 2018-19 the tourism industry brought in a whopping $60.8 billion in direct tourism GDP.
