Atlanta Restaurants: Houston All-Day Brunch Restaurant Taste Bar and Kitchen Opens a Ghost Kitchen in Atlanta… - Eater Atlanta

Houston all-day brunch hot spot Taste Bar and Kitchen now includes a ghost kitchen at Forrest Eatery in Atlanta’s Berkeley Park neighborhood, with owner chef Don Bowie also planning to open a full-service location of the restaurant nearby at Atlantic Station early next year.

With lines typically stretching out the door on the weekends, Taste Bar and Kitchen is known in Houston for its menu of Southern comfort and brunch foods, like Cajun chicken and waffles, Fruity Pebbles waffles, catfish and grits, and bacon and lobster mac and cheese. Look for a pared down version of the menu offered for delivery from the Berkeley Park ghost kitchen, which becomes Taste Bar and Kitchen’s third virtual restaurant. Just where Taste Bar and Kitchen will be located at Atlantic Station has yet to be announced.

Taste Bar and Kitchen joins a rapidly growing list of similar all-day brunch establishments now open around Atlanta, including Breakfast at Barneys, the Breakfast Boys, Johnny’s Chicken and Waffles, and Gocha’s Breakfast Bar.

Bowie opened Taste Bar and Kitchen with former business partner Kevin Kelley (True Kitchen and Kocktails) three years ago in Houston’s historic Third Ward neighborhood. The restaurant quickly became a popular spot for boozy brunch and live jazz, especially on the weekends.

Kelley and Bowie parted ways last fall, with Kelley filing a lawsuit against the chef, which claims Bowie stole money and food from Taste, improperly took out Payroll Protection Program loans, and conspired with the valet company to pocket those funds. Bowie filed a countersuit in response to the claims denying all of the allegations and stating that, unbeknownst to him, Kelley hired his sister to act as the restaurant’s accountant when she was unqualified to do so due to her license being “on probation.” Bowie also claims Kelley stole some of the recipes from Taste Bar and Kitchen to use at his Dallas restaurant True Kitchen and Kocktails.

According to Harris County court documents, it appears a trial could take place in February 2022.

Over the summer, Taste Bar and Kitchen caught flack for supporting, then instituting a similar controversial dress code policy as fellow Houston restaurant Turkey Leg Hut. People will be denied service for wearing white tank tops (for men), pants that are “excessively baggy,” “overly distressed” clothing, and excessively revealing clothing or exposed undergarments. The dress code is not currently listed on Taste Bar and Kitchen’s website and it’s not clear if the policy will be implemented and enforced at the upcoming Atlanta location.

Eater reached out for more details on the Atlanta restaurant.
