‘Leave immediately’: Emergency declared on Fraser Island - Courier Mail

People in a major Fraser Island tourist village have been told to leave immediately, with bushfires expected to hit the area this afternoon.

A “leave immediately” bushfire warning has been issued for a major Fraser Island tourist village, with police declaring an emergency as worsening conditions threaten the area.

The Fraser Island fire has been burning for more than seven weeks, and razed through at least 50 per cent of the world-heritage listed site.

There are now three warnings active for the island, with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advising people at Happy Valley township, on the island’s east coast, to leave immediately and head south to Eurong Resort.

Police issued an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) for the area.

“The exclusion zone encompasses Happy Valley Township and extends 20 metres beyond the encompassing dingo fence including the Yidney Rd high tide exit road from the south of Happy Valley Township and continues to the Yidney Rocks bypass road,” A QPS statement said.

“(It) further includes the Yidney Rocks bypass road south to the Eastern Beach and the housing complex known as the Oaks housing complex Eastern Beach, ending at the southern 40klm zone ahead sign.”

In an alert, QFES said there was a bushfire approaching Happy Valley.

“Leaving immediately is the safest option, as it will soon be too dangerous to drive,” the alert said.

“Any persons in the vicinity of Happy Valley township should leave the area heading to the Eastern Beach and head south to Eurong Resort.”

Fire crews are working to contain the fire, but scorching temperatures and northerly winds are creating havoc, with smoke haze reducing visibility.
